How To Wash A Hairpiece: 6 Steps

A men’s hairpiece can last up to six months, provided you have followed the maintenance guideline including how to wash it. Although you can take a shower while putting it on, sometimes you need to take the piece off and clean it separately.

The frequency of washing depends on a lot of factors. For example, if you wear the piece round the clock and live in a hot, humid place then you should clean it once a week.

If you are not a regular wearer but wear a hairpiece to enhance your looks while you are out for a party or event, then you should wash it after using the piece for 7/8 times.

Step 1
Before washing the piece you need to comb it. If you are a wearer then you must know that we should always use large-toothed combs to brush hairpiece hair.
Make sure that there is no tangle before soaking it. Check whether your fingers can freely comb through.

Step 2
Fill the sink with lukewarm water and add shampoo but before immersing the piece, first dampen the hair with a water spray. Let it soak inside the sink for a couple of minutes.
Turn the base up and again leave it for 3/4 minutes.
You should use purified water only to wash hairpieces.

Step 3
Pick the piece and drain the sink to refill it with fresh cold water. Rinse the piece well. Repeat the action until all the residues of the shampoo are removed.

Step 4
Again fill the sink with tepid water and add conditioner. Both the shampoo and the conditioner should be completely sulphate free. Soak the hairpiece again and leave it for a minute or two.

Step 5
Wash the hairpiece again the way you did in step 3.

Step 6
Pick the piece from the sink and hang it to dry in a covered place. Do not ever squeeze it.
